Latest News / President's Report - July 2019

A warm welcome to all our members and to all who read our News Flush.

First, I would like to talk about the gas incident in Christchurch and how this may impact our industry in the future. A gas explosion of this nature and with so much media coverage can cause panic amongst your customers out there so just reassure them that these accidents are rare with gas. It is also a good time to go back through all of your customer’s records and check to see if regular maintenance and servicing is being carried out on gas appliances. Talk to your employees and ensure all of your staff to do the basic checks required. Reinforce the importance of testing for soundness both before and after working on any gas installations.  It is a good reminder to all practitioners, not just gas fitters, to look at a health check on their insurances and to increase public liability where required.

We are now getting much more media coverage and exposure out there which is great for our organisation and the industry. I was asked to comment on gas/electric vehicles for a news story.  Although I am not against electric vehicles I feel that they just won’t cut the mustard for most trade’s people at this time. Electric vehicles are just not equipped to handle some of the challenges that face our day to day working environment but I do look forward to when they are.

I thank Chester’s for a great night on the 2nd of July at Trust Arena. It was good to see so many of our members and supporters there.

My pre trade group at NZMA have just successfully completed their course and I congratulate them and wish them well on finding jobs in our industry. If you are looking for an apprentice please don’t hesitate to call the NZMA team and discuss options available to you as an employer.

I would also like to congratulate all those who attended and passed my IQP backflow course. It was a complete success and I will be running another one in August so stay tuned for the dates.

Once again, I urge all of you to join our Association if you are not a member. Your views and say are important to the Association and industry.

I am truly proud to be your president and to be part of an Association that truly represents the industry.

That’s it from me,

Happy reading!
