Latest News / PRESIDENT'S REPORT - July 2020

A warm welcome to all our members and to all who read our News Flush!

It’s that amazing time of the month again where we put together our News Flush and for me this year is marching forward ever so fast. I think with Covid-19 and the lock down it gave us all time to reflect on what is so very important in life, family and contact with loved ones. Now, moving forward and talking to so many of you about how it has affected our industry and work places we still must band together to support everything Kiwi.

Our AGM is coming up fast which will be on the 13th of August at the Remuera Club, Remuera, which will be followed up by an awesome “New Innovative Products and Technology” night, so don’t miss out! Everyone is welcome to attend this evening and it will be a great way for our associates to show case their new products now as we don’t have the CPD roadshow this year.

On another note, I was asked to comment on the gas explosion in Christchurch because Work Safe had released details that there were two prosecutions but no names. My response to media was that there is very little to comment on because it is still an ongoing investigation and to let the correct parties do their part. When further details are released, we can then look at how we respond. The “Gas Safety Evening” our Association held was a good example of how our industry came together and we would possibly look at another evening like this.

Training in our industry must be a top priority and with lots of people looking at changing jobs or having a rethink on trades we have had a major influx of new people. We must also consider those who are stuck or may not have completed apprenticeships or possibly not been able to sit board exams. When talking to most of you the key issue is not finding trainees but finding good tradespeople to work for you and train new recruits. I am looking at what we can do to transition these people stuck in limbo so please ring me on 0274 345 096 or contact Katrina secretary@nzpdg.org.nz for further information. I am also looking at another “Backflow Training Course”, the first one since lock down. It will be conducted on   the 14th and 21st of August at Aqualine, so be in quick! Again, you can ring me to book a space.

We also must consider how LIFE affects all us from time to time and pressures from both home life or the working environment. Stress and mental fatigue can lead to more serious issues with health and I think as an industry we must look after each other. For many years there has been a negative view to people who may have suffered from a mental illness or had issues but now that has all changed. Everyone is subject to the pressures of LIFE and therefore at some stage will have to deal with these issues. It is therefore for this reason we have used our “Top Tech Tip” space to cover this important matter, so don’t forget to read it and I will see you all at our AGM and Innovative New Products and Technology night.

If you’re not a member of our Association you are missing out on so many great opportunities, so don’t forget to check out our “Membership Application” forms.

That’s it from me, happy reading!
